Throughout history, music and rhythm have been used in religious ritual or meditation to bring human beings into the ecstasy of the divine presence, by whatever name that has been called at any given time. The frame drum is one of the oldest drums in the world dating back to 3500 BC. In her book "When the Drummers Were Women: A Spiritual History of Rhythm, author Layne Redmond tells us how the Mediterranean Goddess tradition included the frame played mostly by women. Frame drums originated in the ancient Middle East, India, and Rome and reached medieval Europe through Islamic culture.
